Essential Guide to Software-Based Data Recovery

Important: Proper Installation and Use of Data Recovery Software to Avoid Permanent Data Loss
Successful data recovery depends not only on the software used but also on how it is installed and operated.
Many failed recovery cases result from improper use of data recovery software, which causes severe secondary damage to the original data.
Secondary damage typically occurs when deleted or formatted areas are overwritten. If the system is powered off immediately after file deletion or partition formatting, data can often be recovered.
Continuing to use the computer and performing write operations—such as editing, creating, or copying files—in the affected area will overwrite the original data. Depending on the extent of overwriting, full recovery may not be possible.
JiWang Data Recovery experts advise: Improper installation or use of data recovery software can cause secondary data damage and permanent loss of your files.
  1. If lost files are located on the system drive (the drive containing the operating system), do not install or run data recovery software on that system. Even installing the software to a different partition on the same drive can overwrite and damage the files you need to recover.
The recommended approach is to shut down the computer, remove the hard drive, and connect it as a secondary drive to a stable, virus-free computer with data recovery software installed.
If no other computer is available, boot from a WinPE environment using a portable version of the recovery software stored on a USB drive. For systems with less than 256 MB of RAM, ensure the WinPE virtual memory swap file is set to a partition other than the one being recovered.
  2. Using Final Data as an example, some English versions prompt to install a deleted file management feature during setup. If you select 'Y' without understanding the prompt, Final Data may overwrite data instead of recovering it. It creates a hidden 'Drive Information' folder on each partition containing management files ranging from tens to hundreds of megabytes, which can overwrite and destroy existing data.
Therefore, carefully read all prompts in data recovery software before selecting 'Y' or 'N'. Alternatively, install the data recovery software on a different drive first.
  3. Preserve your recovery options. Never save recovered files to the same partition being recovered. Beyond the risk of overwriting data, there are additional reasons for this precaution.
Recovered files may appear to have correct names and directory structures but could be corrupted, unreadable, or contain garbled content when opened.
The directory structure may appear intact during export, but folders could be empty upon inspection.
Initially recovered data may seem complete, only for missing content to be discovered later.
To preserve future recovery options, never specify the source partition or any partition scheduled for recovery as the destination for exported files.
Even after verifying every file and folder, avoid copying data back to the original location. If restoration to the original drive is necessary, create a physical image first.
A physical image preserves the exact state of the drive containing lost data. Refer to the WinHex imaging documentation for details.
